(no subject)

I hate working with live material. I hate it. There were two vials of cells brought up and BOTH had to be thrown out today. One was contaminated - in four days, fungus have grown so much it has completely exhausted the medium and there were multiple visible hyphae. Horrible. The other flask wasn't contaminated, but probably because the medium is too old (made in late May) the cells have all turned into macrophages and so had to be thrown out, since we are only looking at the monocytes, not tissue macrophages, and their cytokine pattern is different.

That's the reason I was a chemist and not a biologist - salts don't die on you. Even if an organic substances does oxidize, it is something that can be prevented through proper technique and storage. With living things, you never know when they are going to die on you.

Just like with patients - you treat them, and treat them, and treat them, and get ready to submit a paper about them - and then they die on you!

To lighten up,

The only kind of friend I want to be is a good friend. I believe friends are precious enough to be treated well even when I myself feel terrible.
