Since when is "responsible" a bad word?

Why do people so stanchly refuse to take care of themselves? I had someone call me at the pharmacy tonight, and ask what she could take for cramps. As I started digging for more info, I've learned that she has been throwing up and had diarrhea and hasn't eaten since Monday. Of course, I was urging her to go to the doctor. She wasn't keen on that, but after 15 or so minutes of dancing around, suggesting different things, and sounding the most compassionate I can, I think I've convinced her. About half an hour later, I got a call from my own mom, asking me to buy her something to help the bile flow. She said her liver is acting up. I asked her for her symptoms, and had her palpate the liver. She says it's painful on palpation (though there is no pain otherwise) and she has had nausea for the last few days. I told her to go to the doctor, she said she will wait until Monday. I know her doctor has some hours tomorrow, so I will make sure I get her to see him. Sheesh, should I drag a 55-year old woman to the doctor by hand? Anyway, why do my parents never see a doctor when something happens unless I force them? Had I wanted to take care of someone and think for someone, I could have gotten married and had three kids by this age. As it happens, I rather enjoy my selfish carefree existence.
